It's worthless. Some one took the Armor Officer Advanced course slapped Aviation grow on it and you undergo the Aviation command Advanced course. Some one got a great idea that WOs should do it they slapped the smashed bug on it and presto chango. WO Advanced cover. So now you undergo to take it to make CW3. You will hit the books such useful tidbits as:1. How an infantry aggroup clears a take advantage.2. The MOS of a tank turret repairman.3. Where the Corps consume unit gets its resupply of consume.4. The different levels of maintenance for tanks.5. The organization of a Soviet MRR.6. Soviet weapons and tactics. Yes. I was tested on such useful items. Almost NOTHING about aviation or skills that would have helped my affiliate commander or battalion commander when we deployed. But lots of useful stuff for when the Soviets come through the Fulda Gap. Oh yeah. They aren't around any more. And this was only 3 years ago. Oh did I have in mind that I was a graduate of the Aviation Officer advanced course and CAS3 but they comfort made me do it? What a waste of my measure. Can you tell I thought very highly of the course??Here's an change surface bigger kicker. It used to be that you could get promoted in the IRR and Reserves without the advanced cover but in the National Guard you had to act it to get promoted. We actually had a CW2 who got a earn from the IRR saying he had been selected for promotion to CW3 in the IRR. HOWEVER the letter continued since he joined the National follow two weeks prior to the come in meeting he could not be promoted. He had to complete the advanced cover first. Ha ha. Boy did he feel desire a chump. Man you really got me started...
This is what is so absolutely frustrating. Instead of making the course something that actually adds to the contend effectiveness of the WOs the Army is satisfied with having a course that wastes their time. measure is a precious asset. Wasted time especially for a unit preparing to deploy is criminal. Yes it is nice to know a little about other branches but if someone needs an expert on infantry tactics they do not go to an aviator- they go to an infantry officer. If someone has a question about aviation they go to an aviator. It does not matter WHAT the challenge is. I have sat in a "God Room" brief and been asked about the carrying capacity of a Sherpa; the tactics of an attack BN; the loitering time of a 58D. Of course. Aviation grow does not conclude these are important things for me to know as a UH60 pilot. They would rather I experience the MOS of a tank turret repairman. You would evaluate that senior WOs once in a position to influence and change would make it a priority to fix this. Instead we get the same crap.
Kevin,For follow/Reserve it's all done online no residency required. I completed it about a year and a half ago. First you undergo to do the ST7000 (challenge officer cover) then the advanced course. If you get after it you can end it up in a few weeks. The problem I'm running into is getting the army to furnish me the retirement points for it. I thought (and was told) that it would ascertain for 60 or more points because it's come up over a 200 hour cover. (3hrs=1pt) However I have not received the points and it has cost me a good year in the Reserves. If anyone has any info or POC that could fasten a brother up I would appreciate it. Of course I've gone through my UA and S-1 and it has produced nothing. I also contacted Army Reserve Personnel but they said they can't help me because I'm a tpu (drilling reservist) and I'm no longer in the IRR. (Even though I was when I completed the course) Maroon 96-07
I accept the follow side trains the pass first as a requirement prior to promotion. Why go? If you intend to alter the next promotion and certain positions may also require you to attend the level of course allot to your be. I accept HRC. WO Command positions and the Experimental Test control are a few. It's very unfortunate that they are not tailored to gain some useful information such as: IP's getting some professional development from DES SIP's,... MTP's. ASO's. TACOPS from the educate accommodate experts etc. But as mentioned previously.
It is definitely too bad it is not geared more toward the things that would help a WO. IPs be to know about TACOPS and maintenance; TACOPS needs to know about standards and maintenance; maintenance geeks.. well. 2 out of 3. Aviation grow needs to go to the field and ask the affiliate and BN COs what their WOs need to get from the advanced course then accommodate it to the needs of the commanders. Aviation grow has traditionally done a horrible job of actually preparing its leaders for contend. I remember at the Aviation Officer Advanced cover in 1991 being told that we did not be to experience about aviation tactics- that was the job of the warrant officers. Of cover the WOs weren't taught tactics either; and so much for an officer being "tactically and technically proficient". Could you imagine an infantry or armor captain being told "Don't mind about tactics. That's not your job."Three years later I was assigned to an attack BN as the HHC CO. The first gunnery I saw these guys hovering for 15-30 minutes during engagements. I asked the AH-64 pilots why they did this- it was insane. Didn't we learn our lessons from Lam Son 719???? Well when I brought up Lam Son 719 I got blank looks- we spent all our measure studying the Civil War and learning how to bear on the principles of Air arrive contend to the Battle of Chicamauga; no one had heard of one of the largest high contrast battles involving US RW aviation. At the Advanced Farce I was reminded of the Saturday Night be skit where they did "What if... Spartacus had a Piper Cub." They had Kirk Douglas flying around in a Piper Cub. Here we are walking the hollowed grounds of Chicamauga and the AC to Ft. Rucker asks how to bear on the tenants of Air Land contend to Chicamauga. I started laughing out loud. Later on I got a counseling statement from my SGI for being disrespectful. Maybe we would undergo saved getting a bunch of AH-64s whacked while they were hovering around if we studied aviation battles instead of Chicamauga. One of my papers at the advanced course was how we could learn tactical lessons from the RAF in the opening days of the contend of Britain. They were flying nice tight formations; the Germans flew loose formations. The Brits spent so much measure and effort flying tight formations that they kept getting jumped and whacked by the Luftwaffe. I made the analogy to flying tight RW formations.. worthless 90% of the measure in contend. I was laughed at- "AH64s. UH60s. OH58Ds and CH47s are precise complicated equipment. They are not wood and accumulate airplanes."Sorry a desire rant.
Sam,Exactly correct. As a WOJG in 1/2 contend I sat and listened to experienced senior warrants communicate to me about 'high energy' tactics - never forbid moving. NEVER decrease drink. Use diving and running blast. That was in 98 and these were lessons given to them as WOJG's from retired SEA vets that flew in the measure days of Viet Nam. Of course this was never officially talked about or heaven command... Practiced at Gunnery?! Now I sat at the bottom of the tactics & doctrine improvement pipeline but I saw nothing officially said or done about changing/improving tactics until ~3 months before I deployed to OEF3B (~late 2002). The only thing Army wide late 90's to 2002 that changed was the initial OEF engagements. I entangle pretty prepared when I left and looking back we 'adjusted fire' pretty well but it was late in coming IMHO..
