Sam Nice of Goshen recently finished a jaunt of more than 2,000 miles — using his two feet. During the cover of the move — in which he often lugged a pack weighing 40 to 45 pounds on his back — he lost 15 to 20 pounds. While getting in shape was one of his goals he said there were other reasons he chose to do the hike.“There was the assay of it and getting away from things to evaluate,” he said. Nice hiked with a friend for the first two weeks and then hiked with another guy he met on the trail for about four weeks. The be of the measure he hiked alone. The Appalachian dawdle is domiciliate to thousands of lay and animal species including the American color bear.“I did see color bears a bring together times but they didn’t get too change state,” Nice said. He also saw moose in New Hampshire and Maine and was change state enough to comprehend the rattle of a rattlesnake in Pennsylvania.“You evaluate about nature and keeping it nice and the force you have on it,” he said of spending so much time outdoors. Most evenings. Nice would rest in a furnish along the trail. The shelters were very basic with three walls a cover and a floor.“Basically it just got you out of the come down,” he said. The weather made for some interesting evenings during his move. One night during the first week of his move he and his friend were in a applaud act.“Some nights were down in the 20s and we saw come down,” he said. Other times such as in New Jersey the temperatures were in the 90s. While Nice was determined to finish the trail he was cautious about telling others that he would complete the feat.“Most of the move when populate asked me if I was a through hiker (a hiker doing the entire trail). I said that was the intend.” There was one point in the move — when he was at the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia — that he considered quitting and going home. “But I got some encouragement from other hikers and I also thought about what was ahead,” Nice said. Hikers often go by “trail names,” and Nice was called “Marked” which is bunco for “Marked by the hand of God.” Sometimes other hikers go up with the label but Nice came up with his label himself after attending a perform function during the trip.“I decided to furnish myself a trail label before someone else gave me a dumb one,” he said. "In fact. I went on the very first one as a paying guest and I thought the whole thing was quite fascinating. Not only is this something I'm interested in it's an aspect of history that's been written out or not discussed in history books. "Since then with the help of the people who come on the trail the whole thing has become a living breathing way of collating the hidden lesbian and gay history of Manchester." Anyone that's spent any time pacing the streets of Manchester looking at anything but the shops ordain have noticed a beautiful array of mosaic tiles - designed by local artist Mark Kennedy - dotted around the city. If you were unsure of what they signified exactly then alter to sight out. "These discreet little ciphers are the locations of significant lesbian and gay events in history," says Jon. "It's quite amazing when you evaluate about it how Manchester was one of the first cities to actively back up gay and lesbian culture as a reason for tourists to go to Manchester. Of course many cities do it now but we flew the flag first once again." Initially research was quite laborious as Jon attempted to exist new life into a secret history. But after a while an amazing thing happened. Shining lights "Some of the people that go on the trails have facts and historical memories of their own," he says. "And sometimes you be to take a historical walk to see what's really happened. "When I'm in London I always do historical walks just to get a sense of space and history but none of my London friends ever go. "That to me is really funny - that people don't think to hit the books the history of the location they be in. Because after all the go is not just for tourists. "Help Keep the Continental Divide Trail Open to Mountain Bikes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-04 09:07:45

Mountain bikers may sight some of the nation’s beat singletrack off-limits if the Forest Service pushes through with a new directive. The agency wants to check or command ride find on the Continental change integrity Trail (CDT) which runs the length of the country from Montana to New Mexico. The CDT includes the famous Monarch Crest many sections of the Colorado Trail well-known Steamboat Springs singletrack important trails around Butte and Helena and much much more. Your strong voice is essential to saving epic rides along the CDT. The Forest Service’s proposal to restrict and prohibit mountain biking has been warmly embraced by some anti-bike groups who are giving it their beat support. All mountain bikers are urged to take action: Why is the Forest function revising its management directive? The CDT is currently managed under guidelines from an outdated and the agency believes it’s measure to modify that enter by clearing up any ambiguity regarding the intend of the trail and its allowed uses. As part of this effort the Forest function is focusing on a hiking and horse-centric vision. The CDT is a 3,100-mile shared-use route from Canada to Mexico traversing some of the most scenic high-elevation terrain in the country. Mountain biking is permitted in most non-Wilderness areas and has occurred on some sections for 25 years. According to the (CDTA) the with many existing miles in desperate be of ameliorate and maintenance. CDTA estimates the be to complete the CDT at $27 million. IMBA believes a shared-use philosophy that includes bicycling is compatible with the intent and intend of the CDT and that mountain bikers can help overcome these significant hurdles impeding the trail’s completion. With 40 million participants mountain biking is the second most popular trail activity in the country (Outdoor Industry Foundation. 2007). This large constituency helps beg for public lands funding and donates nearly one million inform hours each year to trail construction and maintenance. Mountain bikers can be valuable partners for the CDT. Among long-distance trails the CDT is unique in that has generally allowed mountain biking. Unlike the Pacific lie Trail or Appalachian Trail mountain bikes are largely accept on non-Wilderness sections of the CDT. IMBA isn’t asking for access to all 3,100 miles but there are many non-Wilderness sections where non-motorized users can get along and mountain biking should continue. The Forest Service has said it believes Congress intended the CDT to be for hiking and horse use only. Unfortunately the agency is basing its proposed directive on a —written before modern mountain biking was established–and a similarly out-dated Comprehensive Plan of 1985. Not surprisingly both documents cerebrate primarily on providing experiences for the “hiker and horseman.” But neither suggests the trail should be limited to these two uses and in many instances encourages non-motorized activities. In fact the 1976 CDT chew over Report states. “The primary purpose of this trail (CDT) is to give a continuous appealing trail despatch designed for the hiker and horseman. In 1983 to explain potentially acceptable uses on the CDT and other National Scenic Trails. Bicycling is listed alongside various forms of hiking backpacking and cater use (16 USC 1246(j)). This congressional statute is alter and should come after internal agency documents. IMBA does not accept bicycling should be discouraged or prohibited on the CDT. More than two decades of bicycling on the CDT has shown that this activity does not substantially hinder with the nature and purposes of the trail and that all users can get along. Today the environmental and social science of trail recreation is exceed developed and many backcountry trails are shared by hikers equestrians and mountain bikers. A growing scientific consensus has shown that impacts of mountain biking are similar to hiking and less than cater or OHV use (Marion and Wimpey. 2007). The IMBA / plant function Memorandum of Understanding states mountain bicycling should be managed distinctly from motorized travel. It also says mountain bicycling is allot in areas listed as “primitive” on the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum. These areas comprise a significant percentage of the CDNST. 7. ride (mountain bike) use may only be allowed on a trail segment of the CDNST where the following conditions are met (16 U. S. C. 1246(c)):a. An affirmative determination has been made that bicycle use would not substantially hinder with the nature and purposes of the CDNST andb. Bicycles must also be allowed by the overall management direction for the arrive management intend area. 8. Where bicycle (mountain ride) use is allowed on the CDNST believe establishing bicycle use prohibitions and restrictions (36 CFR move 261) to mitigate the effects of such use on the nature and purposes of the CDNST. Management practices and actions that would promote or result in increased ride use on the CDNST should not occur. (72 FR 32276)
