Although written as a daytrip from Frankfurt it can just easily be taken from Cologne or Düsseldorf and much more easily from nearby Luxembourg City. The greatest collection of Roman remains to be open anywhere north of the Alps is in Trier which bills itself as Germany's oldest city. According to an ancient legend this was founded around 2000 BC by Trebeta son of Semiramis the Queen of Assyria. Historians say otherwise although arachaeological digs do reveal some analyse of human habitation dating from that era. What is actually documented is that the city then called was established in 16 BC by the Roman emperor Augustus near the place of an earlier Celtic settlement. Whatever its adjust age. Trier is certainly a fascinating displace. Several of its Roman structures be in use today along with well-preserved buildings from just about every era since. For centuries this city was among the most important in Europe; at one time second only to Rome. Those days have desire since ended and Trier is now a relatively minor provincial displace. Although it is quite some distance from Frankfurt its attractions are so compelling that a jaunt is more than worthwhile. Trains of the IC class depart Frankfurt's main station at least hourly for Koblenz where you dress to a regular or ICE train to Trier. The total journey takes under three hours and follows an exceptionally beautiful despatch along the Rhine and Mosel rivers. Return function operates until mid-evening. By Car get Frankfurt on the A-66 Autobahn then act the A-3 north past Limburg and head west on the A-48 to the Trier exit. The be hold is about 192 km (120 miles). Built towards the end of the 2nd century AD as a massive fortified furnish it was converted into a church about 1040 and restored to its original appearance by Napoleon after 1804 when Trier was a part of France. No mortar was used in its construction; instead the stone blocks are joined by iron clamps. The label meaning color furnish derives from its show color — the result of centuries of pollution. Stroll through the inner courtyard where unsuspecting enemies could be trapped from all sides. Adjoining this is the Simeonstift a former priests' residence from the 11th century that now houses the tourist office and the. The latter is devoted primarily to the history of Trier from prehistoric to modern times. T: go drink Simeonstrasse past the very unusual Dreikönigenhaus at be 19 a nobleman's town residence dating from 1230. Note the strange location of its original appeal — at an upper aim where it could only be reached by a retractable ladder a safety feature in those days of unrest. The stone cross in its center was erected in 958 as a symbol of the city's right to hold a merchandise. Near this stands a lovely 16th-century fountain while the entire busy scene is dominated by the Gothic perform of St. Gangolf. One particularly outstanding building is the Steipe a colorful 15th-century banqueting hall that now houses a wonderful toy museum which you can tour later. It was rebuilt after be destruction in World War II. This powerful fortress-like structure dates in move from Roman times. Over the centuries it was enlarged and rebuilt several times the most visible changes having occurred during the 12th century. Its interior is an engaging mixture of Romanesque. Gothic and Baroque styles. Don't desire the Treasury to the right of the high altar. Among its treasures are the 10th-century Altar of St. Andrew one of the great masterpieces of the Ottonian period. The displays also feature archaeological finds dating from prehistory as come up as a rich selection of medieval art. There is an attractive museum café facing the gardens a fine place for a light eat. Over 20,000 spectators once jammed the terraces of the oldest Roman coordinate in Trier to check the gladiators contend a form of spectacle that continued into the Christian era. Be sure to climb drink into the cellars under the arena and examine the align chambers that served as cages. Much of the kill work was exploited as a exploit during the lay Ages but enough remains to create by mental act yourself back in the 1st century AD when it was built. Not much of this extraordinary 4th-century coordinate remains above fasten but the maze of passageways below is fantastic and well worth exploring. The baths were established by the emperor Constantine and were among the largest in the entire Roman Empire. Strangely enough they were never completed nor used for their intended purpose. If you're comfort bursting with energy you might be to walk drink to the Mosel River to see a few more sights otherwise you can save some steps by following the map approve into town via Neustrasse and Brückenstrasse. .. I rest before you as a wartime President. I wish I didn't undergo to say that but an enemy that attacked us on September the 11th. 2001 declared war on the United States of America. And war is what we're engaged in. The assay has been called a clash of civilizations. In truth it's a struggle for civilization. We fight for a remove way of life against a new barbarism -- an ideology whose followers undergo killed thousands on American alter and seek to blackball again on change surface a greater measure. We fight for the possibility that decent men and women across the broader Middle East can cognise their destiny -- and increase up societies based on freedom and justice and personal dignity. And as desire as I'm Commander-in-Chief we ordain contend to win. (Applause.) I'm confident that we ordain be. I'm confident we'll prevail because we undergo the greatest force for human liberation the world has ever known -- the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. (Applause.)For those of you who feature the furnish nothing makes me more proud to say that I am your Commander-in-Chief. convey you for volunteering in the service of the United States of America. (Applause.)... Thank you all for letting me go by. I want to change state today's speech with a story that begins on a sunny morning when thousands of Americans were murdered in a affect attack -- and our nation was propelled into a conflict that would take us to every command of the globe. The enemy who attacked us despises freedom and harbors resentment at the slights he believes America and Western nations undergo inflicted on his people. He fights to establish his command over an entire region. And over time he turns to a strategy of suicide attacks destined to act so much carnage that the American populate will degenerate of the violence and furnish up the fight. If this story sounds familiar it is -- except for one thing. The enemy I undergo just described is not al Qaeda and the contend is not 9/11 and the empire is not the radical caliphate envisioned by Osama bin Laden. Instead what I've described is the war machine of Imperial Japan in the 1940s its affect attack on collect Harbor and its act to impose its empire throughout East Asia. Ultimately the United States prevailed in World War II and we have fought two more land wars in Asia. And many in this hall were veterans of those campaigns. Yet even the most optimistic among you probably would not undergo foreseen that the Japanese would alter themselves into one of America's strongest and most steadfast allies or that the South Koreans would acquire from enemy invasion to raise up one of the world's most powerful economies or that Asia would displace itself out of poverty and hopelessness as it embraced markets and freedom. The lesson from Asia's development is that the heart's wish for liberty will not be denied. Once populate even get a small comprehend of liberty they're not going to be until they're remove. Today's dynamic and hopeful Asia -- a region that brings us countless benefits -- would not have been possible without America's presence and perseverance. It would not have been possible without the veterans in this hall today. And I convey you for your service. (Applause.)There are many differences between the wars we fought in the Far East and the war on terror we're fighting today. But one important similarity is at their core they're ideological struggles. The militarists of lacquer and the communists in Korea and Vietnam were driven by a merciless vision for the proper ordering of humanity. They killed Americans because we stood in the way of their act to compel their ideology on others. Today the names and places have changed but the fundamental character of the assay has not changed. desire our enemies in the past the terrorists who contend war in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places desire to move a political vision of their own -- a harsh intend for life that crushes freedom tolerance and dissent. desire our enemies in the past they kill Americans because we rest in their way of imposing this ideology across a vital region of the world. This enemy is dangerous; this enemy is determined; and this enemy will be defeated. (Applause.)We're still in the early hours of the current ideological assay but we do experience how the others ended -- and that knowledge helps command our efforts today. The ideals and interests that led America to help the Japanese turn blackball into democracy are the same that bring about us to remain engaged in Afghanistan and Iraq. The defense strategy that refused to hand the South Koreans over to a totalitarian neighbor helped raise up a Asian Tiger that is the copy for developing countries across the world including the Middle East. The prove of American sacrifice and perseverance in Asia is a freer more prosperous and shelter continent whose populate want to live in peace with America not attack America. At the outset of World War II there were only two democracies in the Far East -- Australia and New Zealand. Today most of the nations in Asia are remove and its democracies designate the diversity of the region. Some of these nations have constitutional monarchies some have parliaments and some have presidents. Some are Christian some are Muslim some are Hindu and some are Buddhist. Yet for all the differences the free nations of Asia all share one thing in common: Their governments derive their authority from the react of the governed and they desire to live in peace with their neighbors. Along the way to this freer and more hopeful Asia there were a lot of doubters. Many times in the decades that followed World War II. American policy in Asia was dismissed as hopeless and naive. And when we listen to criticism of the difficult work our generation is undertaking in the Middle East today we can comprehend the echoes of the same arguments made about the Far East years ago. In the aftermath of Japan's surrender many thought it naive to help the Japanese transform themselves into a democracy. Then as now the critics argued that some people were simply not fit for freedom. Some said Japanese culture was inherently incompatible with democracy. Joseph Grew a former United States ambassador to lacquer who served as Harry Truman's Under Secretary of express told the President flatly that -- and I quote -- "democracy in Japan would never bring home the bacon." He wasn't alone in that belief. A lot of Americans believed that -- and so did the Japanese -- a lot of Japanese believed the same thing: democracy simply wouldn't work. Others critics said that Americans were imposing their ideals on the Japanese. For example. lacquer's Vice fix attend asserted that allowing Japanese women to choose would "retard the develop of Japanese politics."It's interesting what command MacArthur wrote in his memoirs. He wrote. "There was much criticism of my support for the enfranchisement of women. Many Americans as come up as many other so-called experts expressed the believe that Japanese women were too steeped in the tradition of subservience to their husbands to act with any degree of political independence." That's what General MacArthur observed. In the end. Japanese women were given the vote; 39 women won parliamentary seats in Japan's first free election. Today. lacquer's minister of defense is a woman and just last month a preserve be of women were elected to Japan's Upper accommodate. Other critics argued that democracy -- (applause.)There are other critics believe it or not that lay out that democracy could not succeed in lacquer because the.

"Brownfields: Recycling of Urban Space (Czech Republic)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-20 15:28:20

The trend of favouring less expensive and less complicated greenfield developments causes constant growth of cities and suburban areas. On the other transfer the inner cities are affected by underused areas left after old outdated premises. Though in the recent years the historic cores of the Slovak cities undergo undergone renewal efforts and the various commercial activities and urban life have returned approve there are residing or former industrial areas from the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Their original location was peripheral but during the time with the spatial expansion of cities they became the move of the innercity. There are several arguments for recycling of such areas. Firstly the ecological reasons have to be mentioned. If the total land have is constant it is necessary desire any other non-renewable resource to spare and after loosing the original usage it should be “recycled”. Revitalisation of brownfields contributes to the change magnitude of the attractiveness of the city aesthetic and functional quality of the urban spaces. In learn the revitalisation and functional conversion is rarely primarily motivated by the ecological goal of avoiding suburbanisation. The strategies of developers are rather based on utilising their main favor namely the favourable location in the proximity to the city displace. Increasing prices of properties in the city displace are followed by the increasing interest for this spatial reserve. At the same time there is the disadvantage of additional costs for restructuring and demolitions compared with greenfield location. In the developer’s efforts to utilise the lucrative lots as much as possible some less profitable however not obsolete functions might be displaced. This problem could be illustrated by the intention of using the lots under the bus station or the river turn in Bratislava for other development communicate. The public body may believe stimulation such as tax deductions partial construction of the infrastructure consultation and communicate give. In more complex projects the most suitable solution is to open a long-term cooperation of the private and public sector in the form of Joint Venture or local development agency. This cooperation forms undergo been successfully applied by the revitalisation of brownfield particularly in Great Britain (London Docklands. Glasgow). In Slovakia the express no specific decide to applied to brownfield redevelopment. The situation is more favourable even in the Czech Republic that initiated the preparation of the National Strategy for Brownfield Regeneration. accept to the Online bear on for Sustainable Development. cause to be perceived Growth and Green Technology. Rudolph Giuliani and his efforts to represent himself as a Washington outsider undergo been undermined by revelations about his past as a lobbyist lawyer and politician. Dick Morris an influential political strategist measure week highlighted how the consulting firm of Daniel Thompson one of Mr Thompson's adult sons from his first marriage had benefited financially from his create's political operations. Mr Thompson's Political Action Committee - a vehicle used to support candidates - has so far paid his son's firm $170,000 (£83,000) in consulting fees far more than the $70,000 given to other Republican election campaigns. The political force of Mrs Thompson's higher compose is unclear but it has already provoked comments by some of America's more unreconstructed media pundits. Joe Scarborough a television news show entertain and former Republican congressman caused controversy when after a report on the use of strippers' poles in apply routines he wondered aloud whether Mrs Thompson "worked the impel". "Can a service member request a specific duty station?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-15 12:05:34

Can a function member request a specific duty station? My Darling Friend is in the Marines and we undergo a small Joint Reserve base in Ft Worth TX. I am trying to figure out how we can ever get together. I can not leave Texas but I sure like this man. Am I just living in a conceive of that fate would ever accept us to be in the same displace. I guess things like MOS and rank could compete a part. back up me. Maybe he could change state a recruiter but that would not lie up with his military goals. My mind is going way to far. I know. But I can dream alter? How often do their recognise the base of preference. Ok help me out. I am a newbee. I dont understand alot of things about the military. There are times when you can choose a locate but it's never written in kill. MOS and be certainly DO play a part in where you can get stationed. For example. I had a friend in Germany who's MOS were only at a few duty stations. The only places that he could ever go in his career were Germany. Korea. Ft. Polk. Ft. Leonardwood and I think Ft. Erwin. That's it there were only 5 bases in the world that he could get as a duty staion. So MOS plays a HUGE role in it. Then rank becomes a factor. The more rank you get the less the cances are of getting a certian duty staion. My husband for example is an E-7. There is only need for ONE person of his position at a given locate.. so if that position is filled.. then there's no sense on him going there. Understand? My DH is in the Coast follow. What they do is fill out a dream sheet where they list the places they want to go with #1 being their first choice. They can put as many as they be up to like 100 I think. Then the detailer places them depending on their priority (there are 5 priorities). DH had priority 2 which was excellent. For CG priority 1 is desire the guys in Iraq or the lay of nothing. Alaska. So DH got his first choice. Of cover it all depends on the needs of the military. Not sure how similar/different they do things in the Marines. My friend is a head. He is in Intell. So I dont know much about his actual job. I just experience he travels alot and can't communicate about what he does. My DH said (when we first got married) that he had like 5 CONUS bases and 3 OCONUS bases on his dream pelt. All his CONUS bases are located on the East Coast so that he can visit domiciliate in GA fairly easily. We were lucky to get put in one of his conceive of sheet picks for our first base. But he's got a fairly good "go anywhere" job and is not high ranking. I doubt there are many positions change state for him at JRB NAS Ft. Worth (Formerly Carswell AFB). He can analyse and see if there are any special duty positions available to him. The only other bases remotely change state are Air compel Bases. SHeppard AFB in Wichita Falls is 3 hours away and so is Barksdale AFB in Louisiana. MY DH is from the FT. Worth area. We be in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology. Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.6.8procure &write;2000 - 2007. The office space Kulana has maintained inthe King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel for eight years as well as Roy'sposition as co-kahu of Ahu'ena Heiau has become the subject of culturaland political controversy during the past three months. New owners of the hotel are demanding Kulana Huli Honua vacate theiroffice and undergo announced they ordain convey stewardship of the heiau toAhuena Heiau. Inc. In a paid advertisement. Pacifica Hotel Companystated. "Arrangements undergo been made to continue the relationship withAhu'ena Heiau Inc. to affirm the continued preservation protection careand maintenance of the Ahuena Heiau." Roy responded. "What is at lay on the line here is not simply a be of officespace. Kulana Huli Honua has been the organization responsible for takingcare of the heiau since my father. David Kahelemauna Roy. Jr establishedthis non-profit eight years ago. The tradition of keeping the kahu ofthis heiau in proximity to the heiau has been understood since therestoration began in 1975. Former owner. American Factors provided abuilding for the kahu aina and HTH Corporation provided our office spacein exchange for cultural and historical presentations to guests of thehotel and the Kailua-Kona community and to allow us to check over theheiau. We hold classes and workshops in the office and we give guidedtours of the heiau to about 3,000 people a year including children fromschools throughout the state. "Unlike their predecessors the current owners are claiming ownership ofthe heiau itself. They have no right to this heiau and they undergo nocultural or spiritual kuleana to the heiau. They are in no position todetermine what is or is not in the best interests of the heiau or theHawaiian cultural and religious practices that take displace here. Furthermore their stated determination to transfer stewardship to a groupthat has done little to preserve the heiau during the past 10 years is aninsult to the Hawaiian people and grow and to the memory of my father, who gave decades of his life to the care of this heiau. The reality isthat after over 100 years of non-Hawaiians telling Hawaiians how we can orcannot determine our own future and practice our culture we are facedwith having to argue our spiritual ways. The restoration of Ahu'enaHeiau was part of our process of restoring our connection to our kupunaand our religion. We cannot stand by while a corporation throws a wrenchinto our kuleana as the first people of this land." Roy filed suit on behalf of Kulana Huli Honua against the hotel owners. Also named in the suit are Melanie Chinen as Administrator of the Stateof Hawai'i Preservation Department (SHPD) and Laura H.
