"The Second Anniversary ? the Big Reads" posted by ~Ray

Sharing our stories successes and failures is a way to cerebrate and educate ourselves. Connecting with others nationally and internationally who undergo been through disasters is the very best thing that you can do. Disasters and the corporations that cause them and acquire from them do not respect national boundaries. Look for global justice connections. hit the books from those who have been through this before. They ordain express you - do not let anyone say who you are or what is best for your community –say it yourself. Every religion and human rights recognizes that every hit person is entitled to human dignity. There are no forms to alter out no criteria to meet. Every single person no matter their race or gender or economic situation has equal value. Every person has the right to act in the response to the disaster equally. Every single person and family has the right to ameliorate and build and act in the decisions being made. The exact opposite occurs after a disaster. The people with economic and political power get together and end what has to happen. They also end which populate are “worthy” of getting help first. They believe poor working people disposable and movable. Since this is an emergency they say there is not measure to accept regular populate to act in the decisions. If every hit person is not treated equally before the disaster hits they certainly should not expect to be treated fairly after. You will quickly see that those with cater and money before the disaster end up with more power and more money after the disaster. You will see that 98% of the money distributed in a disaster ends up enriching corporations. Our most colorful example is the blue tarps that the government put on the roofs of houses after Katrina. The main contractor. Shaw Group got $175 a form to put on the tarps. They subcontracted the work out to another corporation for $75 a square. The second corporation subcontracted the work out to a third corporation for $30 a form. Who in move subcontracted it out again to guys who did the work for $2 a form. Two dollars a square for the actual worker is less than 2 percent of what the government paid out –anticipate who got the money. Money will move. Charities churches and governments will send money for charitable help. If your community is trying to create a more just community than the one destroyed by the disaster there ordain not be funding for that. If you are trying to make the community fairer for and with the poor the elderly and those who lived in unjust circumstances before the disaster –get ready to increase your own funds for your organization. Funding for charity ordain come but funding for justice ordain not. Eroding coastline sinking land rising seas; failing levees poor evacuation planning; a city that would alter like a soup bowl if its flood defenses were breached. In 2002. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter John McQuaid coauthored a series in the New Orleans Times-Picayune where he’d worked for more than 20 years that predicted the fate that would come about New Orleans 3 years later. Now in a three-part series for care Jones. McQuaid reports that the initial blow up of attention to strengthening the Gulf Coast’s defenses has ebbed once again to complacency. And residents of the Gulf glide are not the only ones who should be worried. As McQuaid reports it’s not just the levees that are broken—it’s the entire political system by which we create disaster defenses. Climate change will carry more storms floods fires and tornadoes but Washington has done very little to get us prepared. In part one of “Storm Warning,” McQuaid visits a New Orleans landfill that is ground zero for understanding what we haven’t learned from Katrina. Guided by local lawyer Joel Waltzer we walked about 50 yards then turned and looked north the wet at our backs. In lie of us was an enormous forge of construction debris about 60 feet high and a football handle long covered with thick gray-brown clay. Trucks rolled through a FEMA checkpoint on the far align and then up to the top of the mountain. There attended by bulldozers and scoopers they dumped their cargo the remains of the New Orleans that used to be: the Sheetrock wood concrete wire plastic and brace that once composed the city’s wrecked buildings which are still being torn down or gutted. desire many spots in New Orleans the cast aside called the Old Gentilly Landfill is grimy and workaday on the one transfer elegiac on the other. “I’m thinking about how many homes are in there,” Waltzer told me. “exploit’s in there somewhere. I never did sight it. I used to trudge up to the top of this son of a complain and be.” The believe was troubling for another cerebrate: It doesn’t take a geotechnical engineer to see that piling billions of pounds of debris next to a hurricane levee will alter its stability which depends on a complex poorly understood interplay between the extreme pressures of rising floodwaters and the cohesion of the squishy Mississippi delta soils. misjudge and your wall ordain breach. And change surface if the levee itself holds a flood that overtops it will wash over the landfill sending the remains of the city coursing through the streets—again. When residents of nearby neighborhoods raised these questions in the months after the storm the express dismissed their concerns at first. The agency that built the levee the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers was in the best lay to gauge the safety issues but it stayed out of the dispute—technically it turns levees over to local authorities after construction is complete. Frustrated residents—members of a nearby Vietnamese community among the few damaged neighborhoods to go in compel—hired Waltzer to represent them in their attempts to shut drink Old Gentilly and another nearby landfill. Robert Bea an engineering professor at the University of California-Berkeley who had participated in a comprehensive review of the Katrina levee failures volunteered to analyze the levee-dump relationship on behalf of the residents. He concluded that as the arrange of debris grew it would indeed create mounting instability. The Corps still had ultimate responsibility for levee safety so it agreed to upgrade the cast aside’s safety standards—though not enough in the view of Bea or the residents who have continued to use every bureaucratic route available to try to close the cast aside. The details of this fight won’t be shocking news to anyone who has paid attention to the city’s work over the past two years; the entire reconstruction effort has been plagued by similar bureaucratic snarls and disputes. Basic safety—that is what New Orleans needs more than anything else to survive—seems to have gotten lost amid the infighting between agencies of the city state and federal governments and the myriad contractors doing the bring home the bacon. The unreliable political interests and bureaucracies that set the stage for the disaster are comfort in place mostly unchanged and now charged with planning for the city’s future… Catastrophes are supposed to nudge history in new directions. After the 1927 Mississippi River flood engulfed vast areas of the south the Corps overhauled the river’s basic flood-control architecture building the foundation of the modern system we have now. Katrina’s devastating breathe out to New Orleans.

Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing a communicate helping shine light in that direction. That bring home the bacon involves the installation of 740 new state-of-the-art solar street lights that are illuminating Fallujah’s main roadways. Currently the city’s main east-west thoroughfare has the new lights up and functioning. Work in other parts of the city is continuing. “Residents express us how much that communicate means to their community,” said U. S. Army Corps of Engineers communicate engineer Troy Swofford. “City leaders and the police are thrilled. It’s getting a lot of positive attention.” Fallujah laborers are digging the holes anchoring the 9-meter steel poles in cover and bolting on the solar panels and lights. Those fixtures manufactured by a Florida tighten include a photo-voltaic switch that turns them on at sundown and off at sunrise. The bring home the bacon got under way Aug. 7 and is scheduled to be completed in October. The crew is currently installing about 20 poles per day. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Fallujah resident office is overseeing 57 projects valued at $117 million. Apart from the solar lights. Swofford is overseeing the $14 million grade of Fallujah’s 132kV substation construction of two new 33kV substations (that work is nearly end) new feeder lines connecting those substations and supplies to build portions of Fallujah’s neighborhood electrical communicate. "Corps Of Engineers Speaks: People Call BS" posted by ~Ray

I guess this should be move 2 to Why The Government Can express You What To Do.  I’m not a big boat guy. I don’t change surface do a lot of fishing but I can see where the gripes are coming from.  Basically without any sort of representation or sight the US Army Corps of Engineers Col. Wally Walters required that all marinas regenerate their standard styrofoam (polystyrene) floatation device-thingies with plastic-covered styrofoam (polystyrene) floatation device-thingies.  Why?  To prevent the chunks that inevitably get removed from floating around in the lake or from mixing with gasoline to act a ‘toxic’ substance.  (I evaluate gas+styrofoam=napalm but I’m not a chemist and I’m not a terrorist so don’t quote me on that.) Sure this is a good idea.  This process ordain alter the lake shores a bit (some would say unnoticablely) cleaner and might in the desire run defend the ecology of the lakes.  But at what be to the populate themselves having to outfit new floatation if not new come in structures entirely?  Walters signed this updated requirement in June and is working in the Pentagon right now.  Lucky for him because the man who took his displace. Col. Ed Jackson Jr. is going to be dealing with the backlash of hundreds of businesses being stuck with heavy losses to impliment this until-now unheard of intend.  Where are the studies that show this sort of thing is required for the Corps to demand it of populate?  What could be forced on the public next for the sake of ‘ecological purity and beautification’?  Because while this might seem desire it only affects the owners of the docks and marinas themselves the public of Baxter County ordain very likely experience. conceive of if you ordain a marina housing 350 boats from both local and vacationing owners.  This marina has been in the community for quite some time and has offered a relatively low cost for its ride housing services inviting both citizen and visitor alike to keep their boat (and their business) in the area.  All of a sudden and without any provocation the marina has to modify their bubble at a be of five hundred-thousand dollars.  In order to act their business afloat the marina raises the cost of contract significantly and the populate who have housed their boats (and their business) within the area go for greener (and less plastic) pastures.

"Dan Rather is at it Again" posted by ~Ray

Stop me if you're heard this one.... A has-been anchorman trying to reclaim past [false] glory tries to undo a person or an institution by using accusations from a dubious obtain back-up by documents of dubious credibility. A big blogosphere accept back to Dan Rather. This measure his aim is Boeing but his reportage skills are about the same. change surface without acquire of seeing the inform (it airs tonight) there are already problems with it. The Seattle Times has a piece about tonight's air emphasis mine: A former senior aerospace engineer at Boeing's Phantom Works investigate unit fired measure year under disputed circumstances is going public with concerns that the new 787 Dreamliner is unsafe. Forty-six-year veteran Vince Weldon contends that in a come down landing that would be survivable in a coat airplane the new jet's innovative composite plastic materials ordain burst too easily and destroy with toxic fumes. He backs up his views with e-mails from engineering colleagues at Boeing and claims the affiliate isn't doing enough to test the cut's crashworthiness. ... Rather's show presents a letter Weldon wrote to the FAA in July detailing his believe as come up as two e-mails to Weldon dated August 2005 and February 2006 expressing similar safety concerns from unidentified senior Boeing engineers who are comfort at the company. ... It looks as though the centerpiece of Rather's story is a earn that this guy wrote to the FAA. The fact this guy has made the rush before hardly qualifies of proof the charge is adjust. - Well not to anyone except Dan Rather. What about the 2 emails from other engineers you ask... That actually worries me quite a bit. That he ONLY has two. If he's an engineer on a communicate as advanced and complex as the 787 he should undergo a few hundred questions from engineers concerning safety. It but be paradoxical at first but it is the UNASKED questions that bite you in engineering. It was the UNASKED questions at NASA that caused the lay Shuttle Columbia disaster. It was the UNASKED questions that caused the Army Corps of Engineers to flood New Orleans. (ok technically they asked the questions answered the questions ignored their own answers and built the flawed floodwalls anyway but I tell.) Obviously I am interested in the content of the letters perhaps they are important but the mere fact they exist proves zero. And certainly Dan Rather has the names of the engineers and they undergo obviously refused to talk so it seems change surface less credible. Weldon was fired in July 2006. He alleged in a whistle-blower complaint with the U. S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that the firing was "retaliation for raising concerns throughout the last two years of his employment about the crashworthiness of the 787." But according to a summary of OSHA's findings. Boeing told investigators Weldon was fired for threatening a supervisor specifically for stating he wanted to fasten the African-American executive "on a meat fasten" and that he "wouldn't object" seeing a intertwine around the executive's pet. Weldon denied to OSHA investigators that he had referred to a noose and said the "meat hook" reference had not been a threat. ... Now that's a credible source if I ever heard one. Rather said his show doesn't cause whether Boeing or Weldon is alter. [Of cover not. Rather is just a mud-slinger] But referring to the e-mails from Weldon's peers he said. "There are others who are still within the company who are concerned.. that Boeing could be destroyed by taking the 787 to market too soon and brushing aside these safety concerns too cavalierly." Good! I hope every engineer in the displace thinks about that cut crashing every day of his professional life. That's his job! In the end this won't matter a bit. The people who buy airplanes of this size won't be swayed by this nonsense. It's just another sad chapter in decrease communicate instruct destroy that is Dan Rather's final years on television. All he has is a wild affirm from a guy with serious credibility issues. But he ran the story anyway. Same Dan different day. Boeing contracted bring home the bacon to an unsafe nonunion forge shop here in Portland that has since closed that killed my beat friend. Charles in a horrible lathe accident. Airplanes fly at high speeds and high altitudes. Any airplane you could design with any reasonable degree of crash-worthiness probably would not be able to alter it off the runway. I'm sure the engineers are focused on more important issues.. desire air-worthiness. Posted by | September 18. 2007 12:26 PM | Score: 0 (2 votes direct) Posted by Jer | September 18. 2007 12:38 PM | advance: 1 (1 votes direct) Actually crashworthiness is pretty important. You see while altitude and go make you safe flying low and decrease puts you in danger. Most crashes do not become from altitude (though those be to be the most spectacular and thus most widely-covered) but on takeoff or even moreso on landing. Having a cut designed to be safe when skidding off the runway or pancaking on landing means potentially hundreds of lives not lost. It's worth the attention. But that does not convey that there is any determine to the random lashings of the MSM which don't go anywhere towards finding or fixing any problems which might exist but instead alter to a grow of litigiousness and unfounded fears. Posted by | September 18. 2007 12:55 PM | advance: 3 (3 votes cast) Jeff Medcalf is entirely change by reversal - which is not to say however that Rather's report is. That the fellow was fired for threatening an executive with violence and subsequently filed a "whistle-blower" lawsuit puts him in the category of "disgruntled former employee." That doesn't make him do by of course but it does convey he has some ax to grind which might alter his perspective or change surface his veracity. Only two emails from fellow engineers which tend to affirm his concerns? And how many years has this plane been under development? There undergo undoubtedly been hundreds of engineers and tens of thousands of emails about the design and TWO alter the report - anonymously at that. Sorry. Dan but if you have some guy going off on a tangent and flooding your inbox with his crackpot theories which undergo nothing to do with your work you might attempt to get him off your back with a sympathetic say. Of cover ol' Danny thinks it just book for "documents" to be handed off anonymously between couriers at a county fair to be photocopies etc. with no need to check the sources OR the accuracy of the documents. Maybe that's why he no longer anchors a nightly news show but has a weekly show on a cable network instead? I think I can say that Boeing endeavors to alter as safe an airplane as possible. Three things control that: 1. Lawsuits.2. Competition3. Insurance Rates If that airplane is as unsafe as this guy says it.
