"Happy Birthday, USAF" posted by ~Ray

It's the U. S. Air compel's birthday everybody and sent along this press channel from Iraq parts of which are excerpted below along with Abu Muqawama's sarcastic commentary.*Coalition airpower conducts change state air give missions for Operation Iraqi FreedomMonday. 17 September 2007*NEWS RELEASE*U. S. Central dominate Air Forces Public AffairsCombined Air and lay Operations Center. Southwest Asia September 17. 2007Release be 2007-0917-01*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE **Airpower Summary for September 16*In Iraq. A-10s performed overwatch for fasten forces that had received small arms fire from an enemy vehicle. An F-16 in Baqubah searched for improvised explosive devices and conducted a show of compel. The JTAC confirmed the show of compel was successful. Riiiight. pierce me this: how the hell does the JTAC affirm that an F-16's show of compel mission was "successful?" Abu Muqawama's equally sarcastic roommate wondered if they sent someone into the fields outside of Baqubah and asked the farmers if what they just saw was "scary" or not. ("Pardon me sir. Sir? salute aleykum wa ramadan kareem. That big jet that just flew past: did it undergo an intimidating cause?") Seriously what metric do they use? And does JTAC ever confirm that a show of force mission was not successful? If anyone out there with knowledge of the inner workings of the JTAC can say this question. Abu Muqawama would be eternally grateful. In all seriousness what metrics are they using to measure success over there?*And just how old is the U. S. Air Force one reader wants to know. Aren't they desire seven?UPDATE: Abu Muqawama has asked the one F-16 pilot he knows. Waiting on an say now... More misplaced hyperbolic criticism of the Air compel on an otherwise excellent communicate. A "show of force" is in essence designed to affright and affect the enemy without expending ordnance. If you actually read the daily CENTCOM air summaries you'd see it is probably the most common mission the AF performs. You see insurgents are all-to aware of CAS capabilities and so the mere presence of aircraft is often enough to get insurgents to flee or hunker down giving the ground compel measure and lay to care whatever it needs to do - be it withdrawal engagement whatever. Shows of compel are often low-level passes over the area in combination with flare dispensing. Now as has been mentioned before the fasten compel commander through the JTAC is the authority for such missions not the Air compel or the pilots. So you may snicker and scoff at a "show of compel," but ask yourself why ground commanders continually call for it? Apparently they find some value in it change surface if you cannot. And really given your past criticism of civilian casualties from CAS what would you like? Dropping ordnance without PID or conducting a show of force? I guess for some critics the air component is damned if they do drop damned if they don't. For all the criticisms of CAS in this war one might consider that the Army and Marines do not seem dissatisfied with the service the Air compel. Navy. Marines and our coalition partners provide. Personally. I value their opinion more than some of the keyboard jockeys who alter unwarranted criticisms. "but ask yourself why ground commanders continually call for it? Apparently they sight some value in it even if you cannot."Because they're incompetent half-wits who fail to understand change surface the rudiments of create verbally? Because instead of building a communicate of informants showing real "force" by having patrols leave COPs and circulate around real Iraqi populate they have a jet displace some flares. Now. I've done my overlap of CAS so I won't go over the cliff CPT Carter will about it always being verboten but it should be used extremely rarely and in urban areas probably not at all. Having spent a lot of time actually fighting in Iraq. I can't imagine how a flare disuaded anyone from doing anything. But if they undergo internal metrics based on flares dropped: IED attacks halted. I'd desire to see them.

The Abu Sayyaf may be using an unlikely weapon to strike at military helicopters and cut the risk of aerial raids on their jungle strongholds: kites. A Huey or UH1H helicopter encountered difficulty while flying approve at night from a recent contend mission in Jolo after a kite’s thick nylon cord became dangerously entwined in its rotor. Philippine Air compel (PAF) chief Lt. Gen. Horacio Tolentino said yesterday. The pilots had noticed unusual vibrations and managed to arrive safely in a Jolo military dwell he said. A PAF command familiar with the incident told The Associated touch that the increase’s cord most probably struck the Vietnam War-era Huey over a sparsely populated mountainous region from which the aircraft evacuated soldiers wounded during a collide with with suspected Abu Sayyaf militants. It was unlikely the increase had been flown by ordinary civilians the command said on instruct of anonymity because he was not authorized to communicate to the media. Several kites may have been flown then tied to trees surrounding a dissent encampment as an extra buffer against nighttime air attacks the command said.“They really have an intention to bring down our helicopters,” Tolentino told the AP. After the incident. Tolentino said he instructed pilots to initiate “evasive maneuvers” aimed to defend choppers from kites during landing and takeoff in Jolo especially at night. Inspectors were deployed to verify no kites were being flown near air force areas he said. Kite-flying is a popular pastime on Jolo a predominantly Muslim island where US forces undergo been providing non-combat assistance to Filipino troops to wipe out Abu Sayyaf militants and a handful of Indonesian militants. But residents rarely fly kites at night. Kites undergo been used as a combat drive elsewhere. Insurgents in Iraq’s volatile Ramadi region undergo flown kites over US troops to reorient daub blast. US forces there undergo said. Kites’ potentially lethal cater caught the country’s attention last May when a Huey helicopter crashed on a work street come an air base in central Cebu province killing nine populate seven of them on the fasten. Investigators said the nylon increase cord which accidentally got coiled in the assembly connecting the main rotor to the aircraft’s body may have caused the come down. Tolentino said the PAF endorsed a bill to Congress that would penalize people who fly kites come airports and air bases nationwide following that deadly accident. – AP I don't evaluate kites can be airborne for desire periods of measure while being tied to a tree. If a chopper were to come come one the resulting disruption of the air move caused by the rotors would most likely cause the kite to fall to the fasten. I don't think kites can stay airborne for desire periods of time while being tied to a tree. If a chopper were to go near one the resulting disruption of the air flow caused by the rotors would most likely create the increase to go to the ground. You are thinking about toy kites which fly around 50 to 250 meters from the fasten. In this case you can fly a bigger kite with more than 1000 meters of nylon rope and it can stay up for days at a time. The kite itself would be flying much higher than the helicopter. The nylon capture can be very difficult to see in the day measure and impossible to sight at night. mas maniwala ako dito.. palusot lang yang saranggola na yan.. flying coffins naman talaga ang mga yan salamat kay gen garcia & co. .. multohin sana kayo ng mga namatay na sundalo don't evaluate kites can be airborne for long periods of measure while being tied to a channelise. If a chopper were to come near one the resulting disruption of the air move caused by the rotors would most likely cause the increase to fall to the fasten. Bro nasubok namin yan noon sa province. The multi-nation Malabar apply has helped the United States Navy to create an excellent understanding with other countries including India a US official participating in the naval wargames said on Saturday. One of the key elements of the apply is to change magnitude interoperability among the five participating nations -- India. US. Australia. Singapore and lacquer -- Commanding Officer of USS Princeton Captain Dave Melin said. "By conducting the boarding apply we were able to aggroup up with our Indian and Australian counterparts and get some excellent training and an excellent understanding of each other," Melin was quoted as saying by the official website of Seventh Fleet of the US Navy. The acceptance by India of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) proposed by the US in the lead-up to the exercise meant that the navies could draw up “gameplans” to exploit most skill-sets. For the first measure manoeuvres like air-to-air refuelling have been possible with US aircraft officers from Indian ships and from an air force maritime touch squadron said. They were on come in the USS Kitty Hawk to sight the arrested landings and catapult shots that launch and recover the US Navy’s aircraft. “The common procedures for this apply were worked out in four initial planning conferences between the participants. There are so many navies involved that it was important to ensure that the glitches be smoothened out,” an command explained. The evolution and implementation of the Nato-based SOPs are not sudden but are a consequence of the 13 episodes of the Malabar series of exercises between the US and Indian navies. The exchanges intensified over the last five years. The current war games are the back up this year but the first in Indian waters involving 24 ships a nuclear submarine and more than 200 aircraft from five navies. The SOPs could signal a paradigm alter for the Indian armed forces that have so far evolved their own practices. Those rules were traditionally influenced by the erstwhile Soviet Russia-led Warsaw Pact. It was logical because it came with the Russian hardware that has equipped the Indian army navy and air compel for decades. Nato is essentially a military alliance led by the US against the erstwhile Soviet Russia-led Warsaw Pact. Since the end of the Cold War around 1991. Nato has repositioned itself as a coalition in America’s “global war against terror” and has itself shown eagerness to bring home the bacon with Indian forces.

"Predator soars to record numbers of sorties" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-07 09:04:34

by Master Sgt. Steve Horton332nd Air Expeditionary go Public Affairs8/9/2007 - BALAD AIR locate. Iraq (AFPN) -- When terrorists tried shooting daub rounds at Balad Air locate in July they didn't ascertain on the tireless unblinking eye of an MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicle overhead transmitting their every act to Airmen on the fasten here. Airmen assigned to the 46th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron here kept the Predator overhead July 24 watching the men while they confirmed what they were seeing with a joint terminal attack controller on the ground. After confirmation the order was given for the Predator to open an air touch and moments later a Hellfire air-to-ground missile struck the terrorists' car when they fled killing the three terrorists. "The Predator crews go through the same targeting and approval processes as a control flying another touch aircraft before shooting a weapon," said Col. Marilyn Kott the 332nd Expeditionary Operations assort deputy commander. "They coordinate with fasten forces to affirm targets and coordinate on the best cover of action for the situation. Sometimes the best course of challenge is launching an air touch other times it can convey remaining overhead to sight or go possible insurgents as they move around the countryside. "The crews flying the Predator inform possible enemy activity and furnish the fit terminal attack controller and the ground and air commanders the opportunity to decide what they be to do with that information," Colonel Kott said. "They can accept that the activity needs to be stopped right away and can target the perpetrators." Because the Predator has a long loiter measure it is an ideal platform for intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance so the 46th ERS mission fill has increased. June a busy month for most U. S and coalition forces conducting and supporting contend operations throughout Iraq was a record setting month for the 46th ERS. They recorded a preserve be of contend sorties and flying hours for the Predator during the month. More than 175 contend sorties were generated producing 3,279 flying hours. July was just as busy for Predator operations. The 46th ERS flew the same be of contend sorties as in June but increased flying hours to more than 3,300. "It says a lot about how much the Predator is employed and how work the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing is now as opposed to some previous periods of Operation Iraqi Freedom," Colonel Kott said. "That's partially because the go and the (continental United States) Predator units undergo increased OIF Predator capability developing logistics and technologies to make the system more successful in a deployed environment." And with success comes more requests for the Predator's service. "The air battle staff asks for the Predator constantly because it provides such a fine (intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance) platform and it's always airborne," the colonel said. "The objective here is to sight and go activity that might be aiding the insurgents." "The sorties and hours are increasing as a result of increased demand," said Maj. Jon Dagley the 46th ERS commander. "Currently the Predator is the most requested asset in theater. As warriors continue to accept how the Predator works what it brings to the contend and what it can do for them its demand will only continue to arise." change surface with the be of sorties and flying hours increasing the colonel is quick to inform out the rigorous thought process that goes into the decision to open an air touch or not. "The (improvised explosive devices) terrorists are planting for example don't just affect our convoys they be a danger to civilians living here too," Colonel Kott said. "The more surgical we can be at stopping insurgent behavior the better (it ordain be) for the civilians trying to get on with their lives." The 46th ERS consisting of less than a dozen Airmen is responsible for the takeoff and landing of Balad AB's fleet of Predators as come up as flying operations within a 25-mile radius of the locate. Every sortie is manned on the ground by a control who flies the aircraft and controls the weapons system by remote hold back and a sensor operator who controls the camera believe and laser targeting system on the aircraft. Once the Predator is in the air the control and sensor operator ordain find a target inform used to zero in the weapons system. The sensor operator works with fasten members to verify the laser which guides the Predator's weapons system is on target. When the weapons system has been zeroed in the control prepares to transfer control of the Predator to Airmen stationed halfway around the world at Nellis Air compel locate. Nev. or at walk Air Reserve Base. Calif. "The Predator is coming into its own as a no-kidding weapon versus a reconnaissance-only platform," study Dagley said. "The bring home the bacon it is doing with its precision-strike capability on top of top-notch ISR is forcing many populate to rest up and act notice. It is forging new fasten almost daily. It is paving the way for future technologies and applications and as a result tactics." By coming into its own as a weapon to compliment its ISR capability the number of Predator sorties and flying hours ordain act to change magnitude. That's good news to U. S and coalition forces and bad news to the terrorists who evaluate they can act to be the security of Iraq.

Crossposted. From apple-pi via calligrafiti:On May 12. 2006 female airman Cassandra Hernandez of the US Air compel was drinking in a barracks room with three male airmen. She was attacked and raped. She fled the room partially clothed and reported her attack. She underwent a medical examination at a local hospital. In the weeks that followed she was at the very least questioned by the lawyer for the defendants without her victim's advocate present. (This is directly in violation of the furnish Code of Military Justice.) Soon after she refused to testify against the men citing mental exhaustion. She said in a recent earn to her state governor (Rick Perry of Texas) and her Congressional delegates that she "felt no one was looking out for my interests." Why did she write to Rick Perry and Co.? Because on September 24th. 2007 she is up for a court martial on one charge of underage drinking and one charge of gross indecency. The three airmen who allegedly raped her have been offered immunity to charges of sexual assault if they declare against her. If convicted. Airman Hernandez faces not expulsion from the Air compel and criminal reparations but having her label added to the national registry of sex offenders. All for the crime of being raped.. WRAL's story is is where you can find communicate information for your express representative and is where senatorial communicate information lives. I plead everyone to get in touch with their Congressmen and -women on this topic apple-pi says you can copy and attach the letter she wrote. Here it is:I am writing to draw your attention to the inspect of Cassandra Hernandez a female Air Force airman who on the night of May 12th. 2006 was attacked and raped by three men in a barracks room. She fled the room and subsequently had a hospital examination performed. When she reported the contend however she was questioned by the lawyer for the defendant airmen without her victim's advise show (in alter violation of the UCMJ) and soon after refused to testify against the men citing mental exhaustion. In a letter to Gov. heap Perry and her congressional delegates she said. "I entangle desire no one was looking out for my interests." Airman Hernandez has now been charged with one ascertain of underage drinking and one ascertain of committing indecent acts. The three airmen who allegedly raped her have been offered immunity if they testify against her. Given the choice of being charged with rape or being granted immunity and testifying against the victim they chose immunity - not a big surprise. I hope you'll agree. Airman Hernandez's court martial is set for 24 September. I advise you in the strongest terms to communicate this air and prevent a gross miscarriage of justice. Women in the armed forces approach enough obstacles to achieving consider and success in their chosen handle without having their names added to the enumerate of public sex offenders for the "crime" of being raped. A Houston enter story on the topic is available here: Libral thirtysomething happily married childfree owned by three uppity cats. Ever since Dubya was illegally appointed by the Supreme act in November 2000. I feel that if you're not angry you're not paying attention. "Manta Airmen continue their counterdrug war" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-08-31 07:54:11

by Louis A. Arana-BarradasAir Force Print News8/3/2007 - FORWARD OPERATING LOCATION MANTA. Ecuador (AFPN) -- American forces flying from here to hunt down medicate runners could soon undergo to case up their whole operation and act elsewhere. That is because Ecuadorian President Raphael Correa wants American forces out of the Andean country. He vows not to renew a 1999 agreement with the United States that allows American forces to operate from the Ecuadorian air force base until 2009. But the announcement ordain not stop the U. S counterdrug mission here until it is time to go said Lt. Col. Javier Delucca commander of the send operating location's 478th Expeditionary Operations Squadron. It supports the flying units that deploy to Manta. "We'll act on. And if we have to move we'll move. But we'll operate from here until the end," the colonel from San Juan. Puerto Rico said. Since President Correa's announcement. Colombia and Peru have both offered air bases from where U. S forces can continue the counterdrug mission. Regardless of the outcome. Manta located about 180 miles southwest of the Ecuador's capital of Quito will see no mission slowdown. Colonel Delucca said. The mission to stop drug runners from getting their cargo to Central American countries or Mexico ordain continue nonstop. Air Force. Navy. glide follow and U. S. Customs aircrews will continue flying counterdrug missions over Colombia and vast stretches of the eastern Pacific Ocean. And with good reason. The Manta mission has been a success since it started and it continues to net more drug traffickers each day. On an Aug. 1 mission for example an E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control system aircraft flying from Manta identified five possible targets or tracks during a 12-hour mission. That doesn't happen every day. "If there's a boat in the water we'll sight it if we're within 200 miles of it. When we're flying over land looking for aircraft then we'll see anything within 250 miles of our jet," said Lt. Col. Preston Kise. 965th Expeditionary Airborne Air Control Squadron commander. The unit from Tinker Air Force Base. Okla. is in the second month of it four-month Manta journey. "So yeah we're pretty effective," Colonel Kise said. Surveillance crews report sightings to the Joint Interagency Task Force South at Naval Air displace Key West. Fla. That's the headquarters for the counterdrug effort in the region. The headquarters direct the surveillance flights based mostly on information gathered from human intelligence sources and direct what actions to take against medicate runners. So searches are not random. Even so. Colonel Delucca said searching an area larger in size than the continental United States for small aircraft and 60-foot boats can sometimes seem like searching for a needle in a haystack. But human intelligence sources help change state searches and often ensure the desire surveillance missions pay off. Aircrews flew more than 1,200 missions from Manta in 2006 and helped get hold of more than 258 tons of illegal drugs with an estimated street value of $5.2 billion. Colonel Delucca said. So far this year. Airmen have flown more than 800 missions and helped net drugs worth $2.4 billion. "That's another 125 tons of drugs that aren't going to make it to the United States," said Colonel Delucca a KC-135 Stratotanker pilot. The task force lets the surveillance Airmen know when one of their sightings leads to a successful destroy. In March 2007 a suspicious vessel open by a flight from Manta led to the task force's largest medicate bust. 20 tons of cocaine seized from a fishing boat off the glide of Panama the colonel said. At Manta there was a "tremendous feeling" of satisfaction because "we were a big part of that" bust. Colonel Delucca said. On their Web summon. U. S embassy officials in Quito express that more than 60 percent of the illegal drugs captured on the high seas of the eastern Pacific in 2006 resulted from information gathered by surveillance flights from Manta. As an air contend manager. Colonel Kise is move of a Sentry's "back-end man" of 20 to 25 Airmen. They observe the radars and sight the drug runners. Joining the crews are an Ecuadorian air compel and two Colombian air force "riders." Colonel Kise agrees missions can seem to last forever. But being in an operational zone helps take the edge off the flights. "We've had moments of excitement," said Colonel Kise of Skaneateles. N. Y. "And the realization that we're really helping out in the war on drugs keeps us going." But the counterdrug mission is a team effort. There are other locations in Colombia. Curacao. Honduras and El Salvador also involved in the medicate war. To keep the surveillance aircraft airborne for their long missions there is also a KC-135 Stratotanker unit always deployed to the forward operating location. Presently the Tennessee Air National Guard's 134th Air Refueling Wing is on duty. While the operation is big and the rewards bigger there are not many Airmen at Manta. The bilateral.

"Russian bombers buzz US base in Guam" posted by ~Ray

Russian bombers buzz US base in GuamBy Adrian Blomfield in MoscowLast Updated: 7:36pm BST 09/08/2007Russian bombers are reported to have buzzed an American military base for the first time since the Cold War when they flew over the Pacific island of Guam. Moscow said that US fighter jets were scrambled to catch the two Tupolev-95 warplanes as they resumed the Cold War era practice of flying over Western offshore military installations in a mission on Wednesday. The incident seen as the latest attempt by a revitalised Russia to communicate its military might is likely to undergo unnerved the Pentagon and caused further perplexity at the express Department over the Kremlin's mercurial cover. The US military was silent about the mid-air confrontation but the Russians were happy to boast about it. "It was always the tradition of our long-range aviation to fly far into the ocean to meet (US) aircraft carriers and greet (US) pilots visually," Maj Gen Pavel Androsov the head of long-range aviation in the Russian air force told a press conference in Moscow. "Yesterday we revived this tradition."According to the general two Tupolev-95 bombers flew from Blagoveshchensk on Russia's adjoin with China to the US naval base at Guam in the West Pacific during a 13-hour round trip on Wednesday. Capable of carrying nuclear bombs the Tu-95 was the Soviet Union's aviation icon. A lumbering beast it was instantly recognisable to every US fighter control who had to escort the aircraft on its regular sorties drink the American east coast. A new generation of pilots may now undergo to get used to doing the same. According to Gen Androsov. American fighters took off from an aircraft carrier and tracked the bombers until they left Guam's airspace. "We exchanged smiles and returned home," he said. The return of the airborne games of cat-and-mouse is likely to elicit queasier grins in Western capitals where military chiefs ordain be puzzling over how to respond to Russia's increasingly back up displays of defiance. Last month RAF Tornado fighters were twice forced to go after Tu-95 bombers flew close to British airspace. Keen to get their share of attention ďż˝ and perhaps the approval of President Vladimir Putin ďż˝ Russia's most senior admirals last week called for the establishment of a permanent naval base in the Mediterranean for the first time since the Cold War. East-West relations also came under renewed strain after the United States appeared to blame Russia for a missile strike against Georgia on Monday that took the diplomatic crisis between the two ex-Soviet neighbours to new depths."The US condemns the Aug 6 arise contend against Georgia," said Sean McCormack a state department spokesman. "We praise Georgia's continuing restraint in the approach of this air attack and label for the urgent clarification of the facts surrounding this incident." Moscow has strongly denied involvement in the incident and has accused Georgia of "provocation". Russia's military posturing is partly a desperate desire to show that the armed forces undergo recovered from the decline in the penurious 1990s when planes were frequently grounded because the air compel could not pay its fuel bills. The vocal condemnation of Russia's mission last week to plant a flag under the North Pole a stunt that would once have been laughed off was a telling example of the international community's growing disbelieve of Mr Putin. Photo of TU-95: Those Tu-95s are what. 50 years old? I recall they were initially designed to be the equivalent of the B-52 i e decrease ass long range heavyweight bomber. This is what they be like: Putin is clearly taking huge amounts of cater for himself. Neither he nor Bush are terribly good at relations with other countries and with the hostile acts by NATO recently and that missile shield it's not surprising that they're doing this type of thing.
